2013/14 was a record year for Ariens Co Wholegoods. Driven by a 50% increase in our Dealer network within Australia, Ariens and Gravely sales were extremely strong in all regions. While we pride ourselves on producing industry-leading, high quality OPE through our manufacturing facilities in the US and UK, the main reason for our company’s recent exponential global growth comes from the independent Dealer channel. Once again anticipation of an improved season failed to eventuate and, in general, sales were down on expectation. However there was a silver lining for Cox – the continued growth of our Cruiser ZT Range. Improved aesthetics and two additional models resulted in continued growth in what is becoming an integral part of the future of Cox Industries.
During 2013/2014 Cox was not idle: we completed design and testing of our new Stockman 4000 Riders. Coinciding with Cox’s 60th Anniversary, the new range combines both Stockman Live Drive and Lawn Boss Hydro Drive into a new family of ten models. Mechanically unchanged, the new Stockmans have had significant aesthetic and ergonomic upgrades that will improve future sales.
Stockman 4000 range has been available to Dealers since August. We introduce the product to the marketplace via a major Direct Mail and advertising campaign in September to coincide with the start of the 2014/2015 Season.
Cox is also releasing a new range of Chippers in October. Most in the Industry would be aware Cox had been manufacturing Hansa Chippers for the last decade. As this relationship has ended, Cox obviously wished to fill this gap in our manufacturing facility. There is no doubt that our new range will be equivalent of, or better than, other brands currently available in Australia and – more importantly – manufactured in Australia.
Deutscher look forward to this year with many places experiencing good rain. We have had a long history of manufacturing quality, long-lasting equipment. However, the market for Deutscher products has somewhat diminished with very competitive imports and a wide range of ride-on options now available. Deutscher remains a niche company making a range of self-propelled mowers, chipper-shredders and a chipper.
Many readers will be interested to learn that its twenty years since we ceased making the “R” model ride-on. Many of these remain in the field, continuing to give reliable service. Deutscher will continue to manufacture in Australia and provide quality products to our customers.
Deutscher exports to New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Kenya. But we are always looking for new markets here and overseas. This year we are targeting strategic users of our equipment and have increased staff to grow the business with them.

Graden machines continue to set the benchmark for tough, no-nonsense ZT mowers. Not wanting to rest on our laurels, Graden asked our loyal Aussie Dealers what modifications they would like to see introduced. Many Dealer suggestions mirrored Graden’s design team observations. Great minds think alike!
The resulting modifications are now being phased in (mostly Suburban & Mighty Compak). Useful additions such as tie-down points and bigger rear guards (offering greater engine protection) will be easily spotted. Some items that were “options” are now “standard”. Other changes are not immediately apparent – but still improve our already great mowers. We are confident these improvements will maintain Graden’s ZT range at the head of the pack.
Graden are also making a fundamental change to our marketing by involving the Dealer network directly in decisions about when, where and how we advertise in each area. Another example of Graden’s collaborative process with our Dealers.

Greenfield Mowers are Australian Made and Australian Owned. Greenfield does not market any mower or chipper-shredder not manufactured in our Brisbane factory. Further, it has been our policy for over 50 years to support only Specialist Dealers.
There have been some modifications to our range:
Evolution Fastcut models now have Ogura Electromagnetic Clutches combining the safety of an electric cutter clutch with the unique ability to maintain a fully self-tensioning belt system. B&S powered models all now use Premium Professional Series Engines (2-year Domestic & 1-year Commercial Warranties – 20hp Vanguard with 3-years commercial!). The 12.5hp & 18.5hp 32” models have been replaced by 17.5hp & 21hp Pro Series versions. The Kawasaki range offers 21.5hp V-twin in both standard and Deluxe while the 24hp model is only “Deluxe”.
Plus we have something really exciting in store for later in the season!

Honda Power Equipment
2014/15 is shaping up to be the biggest season at Honda Power Equipment for years, headlined by the introduction of six new lawnmowers (bringing our range to 17). The new models complement Honda’s existing range and position us well, moving forward.
From domestic mowers ideal for suburban lawns, to commercial machines built with the serious contractor in mind, these new models are sure to be winners! Further, Honda mowers now start at $599, meaning even more Australians will be ‘loving their Honda’ this season.
While headlines constantly describe the contraction of Australian manufacturing, Honda Manufacturing Australia (HMA) is bucking the trend. Our Melbourne factory is still busy churning out lawnmowers and brushcutters at a frenetic pace. HMA builds about 80,000 units a year (2012/13 figures).
We applaud the actions of Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt in the government’s move to adopt Emissions Standards for all petrol-powered OPE. Honda is committed to leaving blue skies for our children, and Mr Hunt’s announcement is not only a step forward for our Industry, but also an investment in our planet’s future.

Previous years’ headwinds have proven less of a problem due to our broader product range. Our average machine price has reduced and the “All Grass Collection” range is now a 60/40 mix of general maintenance machinery.
While our primary focus may have shifted, we have increased our awareness of changes in product safety, in line with Australian Consumer Law and ACCC requirements. Our range now covers slope machinery 15º to 60º (all comprehensively tested before Australian release). Most are multi-purpose machines with many “quick fit attachments” (all certified for application).
Gianni Ferrari has increased its Outfront ZTs range with both petrol and diesel commercial models. These well-balanced, low centre-of-gravity units with class-leading features are engineered for a long life.
The GF range 16hp – 44hp is completed with the Turbo 4 Cruiser Air-conditioned cabin, (designed for Aussie heat). The 2.1m flex-deck delivers a quality cut with optimum clipping dispersal.
Irus Deltrak and Quatrak models are now in use across Australia. These remote-control machines accept numerous attachments and can: mow, chip, rake, cultivate and sweep (most recent addition – powerful forestry mulcher).
SMG Track and Field products reach a new dimension with new sportsfield reclamation machines with unique products designed to uplift old artificial grass fields with substantially less cost than manual methods.
The new 2WD and 4WD Wombat by Orec range has exceeded expectations. Units groom, climb steep slopes and cut everything from blackberry to saplings. They are being demonstrated right now.

This year we have released the new 1500 Series TerrainCut™ commercial front-mount range. The five models are ideal for commercial users like councils and contractors. They have high-torque, three-cylinder diesel engines 17.8kW-28.1kW (24.2hp-38.2hp), 4WD and 152cm, 157cm & 183 cm (60”, 62” & 72”) high-capacity decks, 1500 Series feature a compact design for manoeuvrability and easy transport. Two models feature two-speed hydro systems for faster operating speeds.
Key user-friendly features include cruise control, comfort seat (air-ride seat optional), Twin Touch™ pedals for the transmission and electro-hydraulic deck-drive clutch. Additionally, 1575 and 1585 are equipped with a new, comfort cab that provides 360-degree visibility. The cab features an air-conditioning and heating system for comfortable year-round use ( air ride seat is standard on these models).
The 1585 also comes with an increased axle load capacity to hold the high-specification cab. The mower’s front PTO is used to supply power to the mower deck which makes installation and removal easier and also reduces heat in the hydraulic drive system.
When the grass stops growing, the TerrainCut™ 1500 Series keeps on going with a range of additional attachments including blades. Plus new ergonomic controls and seat options keep operators comfortable all day.
We have observed growing number of customers in some sectors doing their product research via the internet. Easy access to specifications and price means today’s customers are constantly seeking the best value-for-money. Many have developed a clear preference before they visit a Dealership. We have to meet customer expectations on all fronts: product, price, finance, parts and service back-up.
Combining Kubota’s proven pedigree with the latest technology creates the ideal package for municipalities, contractors and demanding consumers.
The introduction of Kubota Australia Finance (KAF) has been very well received. Our own finance arm means being able to offer users tractor/mower/utility vehicle/ excavator-plus-finance. This will be complemented by exciting new products to be released at our September conference.
This year will see Kubota release an exciting new range of diesel RTV’s as well as premium compact tractors.
We won’t say too much now. But we certainly will come September!
There has been a Big Deal at MTD throughout June and July – that is to say, we launched our ‘Big Deal’ marketing program at dealer meetings around Australia. The culmination of much hard work by our marketing department, the ‘Big Deal’ is the most comprehensive package of its type that we have put together.
The marketing package forms a key part of MTD’s new Dealer Partnership Program, providing a greater level of support for our dealers across their entire business. While the larger facets are now in place, we will continue to build on this foundation into the future.
Our industry is undergoing changes on an unprecedented level. Climatic conditions may be the catalyst for some changes while others perhaps are the result of a shift in the general retail environment. Exactly what drives these changes is uncertain; however, as we look to the future, we can be certain that change will continue. It is only the nature and speed of this change that remains unclear.
As we move into the new season, there is no doubt that there will be challenges. However, these challenges will bring opportunity. I am confident that our new program will provide MTD dealers with a greater ability to capitalise on opportunities as they arise. This season we have added more value to the System with a simple, but effective, catcher hanger allowing the catcher to be stored on the lifted handle system hanging above the engine. This saves significant space when storing the catcher with the mower. It is something we know is important to consumers at home.

Morrison by Masport takes a new twist this season with the introduction of a new range of Morrison MX, Honda and Mitsubishi powered curved- and split-shaft line trimmers (with pruner, hedge cutter & extension-shaft attachments). This range complements our existing DIY range and other power garden products such as lawnmowers, shredders, chainsaws, edgers, hedgetrimmers, blowers and vacs. But wait… there is more! Like Masport, but at a lower price, is a small range of USA made ride-ons. These are very competitive (RRP starts at $1499!) Morrison by Masport offers a great range of consumer products that will complement – not compete – with major professional Dealer brands. But they will appeal to home users and we are sure the potential profit will appeal to you. The Masport sales team is out now presenting these new season products and programs.
With weather forecasts indicating it is going to be dry, it is hard to be optimistic – but when I look at this season’s line-up it is very hard not to get excited!
Murray: We have the best line up since distributing Murray over 25 years ago. We have a smaller but more competitive range from 14.5/38 manual to 24/52 hydro. Most feature Murray’s patented Quick Level Deck. With improved Freight policy and 2-year warranty we are getting positive feedback.
Parklander: Our 30” Parklander mid-engine rider with B&S12.5 AVS engine and Spicer transmission now has a standard catcher (ie 3–in-1). It compliments Murray well. We expect sales to continue growing.
Challenger ZTs include new 48” Residential and 60” Commercial units. All feature B&S engines and HydroGear transmissions with commercial reinforced, fabricated 5½” deep decks (8” spindles – NSK bearings). 2014 sees new mulch kits, sun shades and catchers.
Parklander lawnmowers offer Parklander, B&S and Honda Engines (all Factory Warranties) and our increased volumes mean better prices. The Utility has had modifications improving performance and strength. Our Mulch “N” Catch range now includes 2 x 18” steel decks, 2 x 19” alloy decks and 2 x 22” alloy self-propelleds. Plus a new 18” steel chassis 3-in-1 that joins the popular 21” model (now with twin cup holders – Don’t ask why!) With quality edgers, tillers, brushcutters, chainsaws, hedgetrimmers and blowers you realise why Dealers love Parklander.
Tanaka: This is our 46th year together. Tanaka was the first in Australia and remains the best. Factory promotional pricing has been passed on to loyal Tanaka Supporters. New models include 24cm3 & 27cm3 domestic straight-shaft brushcutters and an enhanced commercial 24cm3 unit (complimenting TBC-270S).
Tanaka chainsaws, blowers, engine drills, earth augers and multi-tools continue to impress. Tanaka hedgetrimmers have improved handle and muffler design. All are backed by 5-year domestic warranty (2-year commercial).

2013/14 has seen the most significant changes for years in Stens Australia’s aftermarket business, which built on the 50+ year heritage and brand values of our former brand Bynorm.
Our business has focused on two key areas:
- improve product range and value to Dealers
- improve “ease of doing business”; remove complications making what should be simple, everyday tasks cumbersome.
On 1st April 2014 Stens launched an all-new 1,208 page parts catalogue focused solely on the Australian market. Containing over 5,300 parts (1,800+ NEW!), it provides over 21,000 OEM cross-references (16,000+ more than our previous edition). Stens services Dealers through distribution centres in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, ensuring timely delivery. That makes doing business easier!
While exchange rates have driven price increases in many sectors, at Stens we have leveraged our global organization to drive PRICES DOWN (up to 20%). Overall, our average 2014 prices are lower than 2013. To help the ease of doing business, we have locked down prices until 30th June 2015.
Underlining Stens’ commitment to quality, we manufacture many of our blades here in Australia. Further Stens have leveraged our Ariens ownership to revert supply of many aftermarket parts from OEM providers (eg oil filters).
The quality message is underpinned by a 1-year parts & labour warranty. If a product fails due to faulty materials or workmanship, we’ll replace it and pay the Dealer’s labour.

This year Toro celebrates a rare milestone: 100 years in business! Toro Company was founded in the US July 10, 1914 and introduced its first product built specifically for the golf market in 1918. We have recently launched our new website with features that allow both loyal and new customers to interact with Toro on a digital level on either PC, tablet or other mobile device.

TPE Australia kicks off the 2014 season with upgrades to our U MOW range of steel deck rotaries. Following last year’s successful launch, TPE have upgraded the U MOW range with the latest easy-start B&S 450E, 550EX & 625EX OHV engines. Additionally, the popular U MOW “Ute” Utility will now be equipped with new B&S 625EX OHV engines for super easy starting and maximum cutting power. U MOW series is still topped by the flagship Honda GXV160 powered, Hi Vac Pro. Featuring one of the best suction decks on the market – it is perfect for wet weather mowing.

Our proven top-end alloy deck range (Honda GXV160 or B&S 750 DOV) is headed by 21” gear-driven, self-propelled TN011. With high suction deck, bullet proof reliability and long service life, plus extra capacity catcher, it is a commercial user favourite. Incorporating one of the best deck designs, a strong stable chassis and top quality durable running gear, GXV160 powered stablemate TN008 push mower maintains the benchmarks it set on release five years ago. For brute power the B&S 750 DOV powered alloy deck TN012 uses the TN008 chassis and running gear.

2014 marks 30 years since Walker Mowers first came to Australia.
The Stead family moved to Wagga Wagga from Sydney in 1970 and were retailing and importing farm hardware lines and OPE. In the early 1970s they were local Dealer for Cox, Simplicity and Power Pony ride-ons.
In 1980 the family sold their retail business to focus on Importing and Wholesaling. They appreciated the need to diversify their range to widen their customer base. In early 1984 John Stead noticed a small line-drawing ad of Walker Manufacturing Company’s new ZT mower in US “Implement & Tractor”. Noting the unique design, he contacted manufacturer Bob Walker – who was very surprised that an enquiry would come from far away Australia! Walker was a small US family business that had never thought of exporting. Nevertheless he air-mailed John a brochure. It arrived a week later and John Stead was amazed at the impressive Walker units.
In January 1984 John Stead phoned Bob Walker to arrange shipment of the first Walker Mower to Wagga Wagga. As Walkers had never exported before, they had to find out what was involved! The money was wired to them and that was the first brick in the building of trust between the two companies.
Over 10,000 Walker Mowers have been sold across Australia and New Zealand in the ensuing three decades. And 30 years later Walker still offers a unique machine.
